Production Companies to Directly Classify Ratings for Online Video Advertisements

Kim Seungsoo's "Film and Video Act" Amendment Passes the National Assembly
No Need for Video Rating Board Review

Production Companies to Directly Classify Ratings for Online Video Advertisements Yonhap News Agency

Production companies are now allowed to directly classify the ratings of advertisements and trailers for online videos.

On October 26, the National Assembly passed a partial amendment to the "Act on the Promotion of Motion Pictures and Video Products," sponsored by Assemblyman Kim Seungsoo. The key point of the amendment is to simplify the distribution procedures for online video advertisements, thereby facilitating the swift distribution of K-content industry products.

Under the current law, self-rating operators could autonomously assign ratings only to the main content of a video. When distributing advertisements or trailers, they were required to obtain confirmation from the Video Rating Board regarding whether the material was harmful to minors. As a result, delays in advertisement reviews consistently led to issues such as postponing the release of the main content.

With self-rating operators now able to directly classify advertisements as well, related administrative procedures will be significantly reduced. The industry expects that resolving delays caused by review processes will improve the efficiency of production and distribution.

Assemblyman Kim stated, "Online videos will be able to be distributed more quickly, which will help the development of the K-content industry," adding, "We will strengthen the foundation for the growth of K-content and continue to improve unreasonable regulations."
