Intoxicated Offense Without Apparent Cause
Victim Suffers Burns Requiring Six Months of Treatment
A woman in her twenties has been sentenced to prison after overturning a table with boiling clam soup while drinking with a coworker, causing burn injuries to her colleague.
According to a report by Yonhap News on the 26th, the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 4 (Presiding Judge Kang Hyeonho) sentenced the defendant, a woman in her twenties identified as A, to three years in prison on charges of aggravated assault.
A was brought to trial on charges of overturning a table at a bar in Ochang-eup, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, at around 4 a.m. on October 16 of last year, causing burn injuries to her coworker B (a woman in her twenties) who required six months of treatment. At the time, A suddenly hurled insults at B's boyfriend, who was drinking with them, and when B protested, A committed the offense. It was found that A was intoxicated at the time, and when she flipped the table, the boiling clam soup on the burner spilled onto B.
It has been reported that A has a prior record of being punished for causing a disturbance in a taxi while intoxicated and for assaulting a passerby by choking them on the street (obstruction of business and assault).
Judge Kang pointed out, "The defendant's actions caused serious injury to the victim, who did nothing wrong, and the nature of the crime is extremely poor." He continued, "The victim has suffered significant psychological trauma, such as feeling anxious whenever she sees hot food, and has undergone a long period of hospital treatment, including skin graft surgery, with considerable medical expenses incurred." Regarding the sentencing, the judge added, "However, the sentence was determined by taking into account the fact that the defendant admitted to and reflected on her crime, deposited a certain amount of money with the court, and has no prior criminal record other than a fine."
A has appealed the ruling.
