Kakao: "To Be Completed Within the Fourth Quarter"
Kakao has recently updated KakaoTalk with artificial intelligence (AI) summary and emoticon features.
According to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry on October 26, Kakao officially introduced a feature in the KakaoTalk 25.9.0 update that allows Kanana (Kakao AI service) to summarize unread messages.
When this feature is enabled, Kanana summarizes the messages accumulated in the unread folder, providing users with a concise overview of the key content. The summary applies to a single chatroom that has at least five unread messages and has received messages within the past 24 hours.
The summary criteria are communicated to users via tooltips, and any changes to the criteria will be reflected in the tooltip text. Kakao plans to continuously evaluate user feedback and usefulness to further enhance the feature. The company is also considering whether to expand the number of chatrooms eligible for summarization.
With this update, Kakao also made changes to the open chat community conversations and the emoticon tab. In the open chat tab, users can now search for keywords to find community conversations containing relevant information.
For the emoticon tab, the default emoticons have been moved to a mini tab, and users can now search for emoticons via the search tab. The 116 default emoticons have been renewed as 126 mini emoticons, which can be used in the mini tab as part of this update.
Additionally, Kakao announced that ChatGPT will be integrated into KakaoTalk on October 28. By tapping the ChatGPT icon at the top of KakaoTalk, users will be able to access the OpenAI GPT-5 model without installing a separate app. Users can also ask ChatGPT questions by tapping a speech bubble during a conversation in KakaoTalk. Various Kakao services, such as Gift, Reservation, KakaoMap, and Melon, will also be accessible through ChatGPT integration.
Meanwhile, the Friends tab, which received harsh criticism from users after last month's major overhaul, is expected to be restored to its original state within the fourth quarter of this year as planned. Kakao has stated that a technical rollback to a previous version is not possible.
