Preventing Depopulation and Promoting Mutual Growth Through Educational Community Collaboration

Hoengseong Office of Education in Gangwon Province (headed by Superintendent Shim Youngtaek), together with Hoengseong County Office and Hoengseong Social Cooperative Village, is hosting the "2025 Hoengseong Rural Homestay Family Camp [Hoengseong Dodamdodam Village Vacation]" at the camping site in Chundang-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, from October 24 to 25. The event invites 20 families from Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon who are interested in the Hoengseong rural homestay program for a one-night, two-day experience.

This program was designed to actively promote and attract interest in the Hoengseong rural homestay program, aiming to prevent the depopulation of township-level areas in Hoengseong County, which has been classified as an area at risk of population extinction. It also seeks to foster the mutual development of local schools and the community.

The initiative is jointly organized by the Hoengseong Office of Education, Hoengseong County Office, and the Social Cooperative Village, and is operated as an integrated educational, cultural, and tourism experience program with active participation from the local community.

The "Hoengseong Dodamdodam Village Vacation" consists of educational experience activities at six elementary schools currently running the rural homestay program on the first day, allowing students to experience real school life. Afterwards, participants move to the campsite for an introduction to the rural homestay program and to enjoy cultural and artistic performances. On the second day, the program concludes with visits to Hoengseong's major attractions, including a tour of Hoengseong Lake Trail, as well as tours of Hoengseong Library, the Youth Training Center, and the Talent Development Scholarship Foundation, providing participants with hands-on experiences of the region's educational and cultural infrastructure.

For the selection of the 20 participating families, advance applications were accepted from parents in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon areas. Despite the application period coinciding with the Chuseok holiday, about 50 families applied, demonstrating strong interest and high expectations for the Hoengseong rural homestay program.

Shim Youngtaek, Superintendent of Hoengseong Office of Education, stated, "Although Hoengseong operates after-school care and academic support programs more effectively than other cities and provinces through close cooperation within the local educational community, it is still not widely known among parents in the Seoul metropolitan area. Through this event, we aim to widely promote Hoengseong as a city ideal for raising children and as an educational city, and to establish the Hoengseong rural homestay program as a new educational alternative model for Gangwon education."
