On October 23, the Democratic Party of Korea filed a police complaint against Jeon Hangil, a far-right YouTuber and former Korean history instructor, accusing him of spreading false information about President Lee Jaemyung and Kim Hyeonji, the First Secretary to the President.
The Democratic Party’s National Communication Committee announced in a press release that it had reported Jeon to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act. The committee stated, “Jeon’s remarks are a combination of falsehoods and speculation, seriously damaging the personal reputation of public officials,” and criticized, “Raising unfounded allegations of an ‘illegitimate child’ and dragging family matters into the issue constitutes a malicious personal attack and a political smear.”
The committee further emphasized, “President Lee did not pursue any private gain through the Daejang-dong project, and prosecutors were unable to prove otherwise, indicting him only on charges of breach of duty.” The committee pointed out, “Jeon cited unverified foreign reports and disseminated them in a definitive manner without any cross-verification or fact-checking.” Previously, the National Communication Committee had also filed complaints against a certain online media outlet and several YouTube channels for spreading false information.
