With a summit between the United States and China expected to take place next week on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting, the two countries will hold the fifth round of high-level trade talks in Malaysia starting on the 24th.
On the 23rd, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that Hu Lipeng, Vice Premier of the State Council, will conduct trade negotiations with the United States in Malaysia from the 24th to the 27th.
The spokesperson stated, "Based on the agreements reached during several phone calls between the two leaders this year, both sides will discuss key issues in the China-U.S. economic and trade relationship."
Previously, on the 22nd (local time), Jamieson Greer, a representative of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), said in a CNBC interview that he would travel to Malaysia with Treasury Secretary Scott Besant to hold trade negotiations with Chinese officials.
As a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to be held on the occasion of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting opening in Gyeongju on the 31st, it appears that both sides have begun preliminary coordination to facilitate the meeting.
Earlier, on the 18th, Secretary Besant, Representative Greer, and Vice Premier Hu held a video call.
