"Hands-On Research Experience" KAIST to Host 'OPEN KAIST 2025' at Main Campus This Month

An event where visitors can directly tour and experience internal research sites at KAIST will be held.

On October 23, KAIST announced that it will host 'OPEN KAIST 2025' at its main campus in Daejeon from October 30 to 31.

This event has been held since 2001 with the aim of providing citizens the opportunity to experience research sites firsthand, helping to make science more accessible and familiar.

This year marks the 13th edition of the event. Sixteen departments and the KAIST Space Research Institute will participate, offering 39 programs across five categories: on-site experiences and demonstrations, lab tours, lectures, department introductions, and achievement exhibitions.

In particular, this year's event will significantly strengthen hands-on experiences in future core fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), drones, brain science, nuclear power, and semiconductors, which is a notable highlight.

First, Professor Han Jun's laboratory from the School of Computing will introduce technology that enables AI to understand three-dimensional spaces and construct virtual environments. Participants will have the opportunity to observe demonstrations of objects being rearranged in videos and learn about the role of AI and the development of spatial cognition technology in future society.

Professor Bang Hyochung's laboratory from the Department of Aerospace Engineering will showcase next-generation drone technologies, including multicopters, unmanned helicopters, and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. Participants will be able to understand the characteristics and applications of aerospace technology and closely observe technologies that have completed flight tests.

Professor Choi Mini's laboratory from the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences will help participants experience the relationship between the brain and behavior. Using an online application, participants can create their own mini-brain and virtually explore the effects of exercise or vitamin intake on the brain, as well as directly experience research equipment and experimental sites.

During the semiconductor research facility tour, participants can enter a cleanroom to observe process equipment and manufacturing stages, experiencing firsthand how ultra-fine semiconductors are produced.

In addition, KAIST will offer a variety of programs, including the Graduate School of Future Strategy's 'Meta-Earth: Climate Crisis and Changes in the Earth Seen Through Data,' the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's 'Centrifugal Model Experiment: Earthquake Research Using Centrifugal Force,' and a special lecture and exhibition on game production by 'Haje,' the game development club of the School of Computing.

KAIST President Lee Kwanghyung stated, "OPEN KAIST is a meaningful occasion to share our research sites with the public," adding, "I hope this event will inspire youth and citizens to appreciate the value of science and nurture their dreams of taking on future challenges."

Meanwhile, individual visitors to 'OPEN KAIST 2025' can freely explore the programs on site by referring to the booklet distributed at the information desk on the day of the event, without prior registration. Detailed schedules and program information are available on the official website.
