KOSPI Retreats to 3,820 Level as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Turn Lower

Individual Investors Engage in Profit-Taking
KOSDAQ Also Turns Lower

The KOSPI, which had been on a strong upward trend, gave up some of its gains in the late session on October 21, falling back to the 3,820 level. The KOSDAQ also reversed course and is now trading at the 870 level.

As of 2:22 p.m. on this day, the KOSPI was up 0.40% from the previous trading day, standing at 3,829.96. The index opened at 3,851.01, up 0.95% from the previous session, and at one point during the session surged to an all-time intraday high of 3,893.06, but has since narrowed its gains.


Foreign investors and institutions are leading the market by net buying 58 billion won and 217.7 billion won, respectively. In contrast, individual investors are selling off 223.7 billion won, engaging in profit-taking.


By sector, the downward trend is becoming more pronounced. Securities (-3.20%), food, beverage & tobacco (-1.66%), distribution (-1.04%), medical & precision instruments (-0.88%), transportation & storage (-0.94%), non-metallics (-0.80%), metals (-0.48%), and telecommunications (-0.43%) are among the sectors with the largest declines. On the other hand, transportation equipment & parts (3.61%), electricity & gas (3.21%), general services (2.51%), construction (1.83%), machinery & equipment (0.89%), chemicals (0.71%), manufacturing (0.53%), and IT services (0.68%) are posting gains.


The "semiconductor duo" that had been driving the KOSPI rally, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have turned downward, dragging the index lower. They are down 0.10% and 0.21%, respectively. Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution (up 1.50%), Samsung Biologics (up 0.26%), Hyundai Motor Company (up 4.03%), Doosan Enerbility (up 0.37%), Hanwha Aerospace (up 2.62%), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (up 8.59%), and Kia (up 1.57%) are all showing gains.


At the same time, the KOSDAQ was down 0.35% from the previous trading day, standing at 872.70. The index opened at 881.53, up 0.66% from the previous session, and at one point during the session rose to 882.10, but then reversed course and extended its losses.


Foreign investors and institutions are leading the downward trend by selling off 130.7 billion won and 37.7 billion won, respectively. In contrast, individual investors are net buying 196.5 billion won.


By sector, non-metallics (-1.74%), finance (-1.62%), construction (-1.40%), machinery & equipment (-1.02%), food, beverage & tobacco (-0.68%), distribution (-0.64%), medical & precision instruments (-0.50%), and manufacturing (-0.35%) are declining, while publishing & media replication (2.35%), transportation equipment & parts (1.64%), textiles & apparel (1.59%), entertainment & culture (1.02%), telecommunications (0.69%), and metals (0.57%) are on the rise.


Among the top KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, EcoPro BM (up 0.12%), Peptron (up 0.55%), HLB (up 9.71%), and Samchundang Pharm (up 0.35%) are gaining, while EcoPro (down 2.19%), Rainbow Robotics (down 2.83%), Pharmaresearch (down 4.82%), LIG ChemBio (down 1.39%), and ABL Bio (down 1.49%) are declining.
