"I Couldn't Be Involved Much in My Daughter's Wedding Because I Couldn't Support Her"
Choi Minhee Becomes Emotional While Sharing Her Child's Experience with Counseling
Choi Minhee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, addressed criticism regarding her child’s wedding taking place during the National Assembly audit period. She clarified, “I did not deliver wedding invitations to corporations or audited institutions.”
On the 21st, during a National Assembly audit session on hacking-related institutions held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Park Junghoon, a member of the People Power Party, finished questioning the relevant institution officials. Chairperson Choi stated, “Regarding my daughter’s wedding, I did not deliver invitations to any corporations or audited institutions at all,” and explained, “The only reason this became known is because it was released through a YouTube channel.”
Immediately before Choi’s remarks, Assemblyman Park raised concerns about congratulatory money being received from audited institutions during the audit period at Choi’s daughter’s wedding. He asked Ryu Jemyoung, the Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, and Lee Sangjoong, President of the Korea Internet & Security Agency, who were present at the National Assembly, whether they had given congratulatory money. Vice Minister Ryu replied, “I want to make it clear that I acted in accordance with the applicable regulations (meaning he did give it),” while President Lee responded that he did not give any.
After Park’s questioning, Choi responded, “After the news of the wedding became public, I had no choice but to send invitations only to Democratic Party members. Nevertheless, some People Power Party members and those outside the Assembly are spreading false claims that I ‘leaked invitations to audited institutions,’ ‘collected money from large corporations,’ or ‘distributed mobile invitations with bank account numbers.’ I did not include my bank account number or my husband’s account number in the invitations.”
Choi also stated, “All decisions regarding the venue and timing were made by the couple themselves. Since my daughter has lived independently since her first year of university, we have not lived together and could not discuss such matters.”
She continued, “I later asked my daughter why she chose this particular date for the wedding, but since I was unable to help with anything, it was very difficult for me to get involved. My daughter received a great deal of criticism when I ran for the National Assembly during her high school years, and as a result, she underwent psychological counseling for a long time.” Choi became emotional as she said this.
Choi emphasized, “I will take all possible measures against the spread of absurd false information. The wedding of a young couple is an extremely private matter that should be celebrated, not politicized.”
However, Choi added, “As I mentioned yesterday, what I failed to manage was not instructing them to return the congratulatory wreaths. I will reflect on why I did not tell them to return the wreaths and will be more attentive in the future.”
The previous day, when Park raised issues regarding Choi’s daughter’s wedding, Choi responded, “My daughter took the lead in all matters related to the wedding. If you look at the content of my questions, you will see that, as a liberal arts major, I was barely able to sleep at night because I was studying quantum mechanics.”
