Additional Smoke-Free Zones Designated, Including Within 10 Meters of Subway Entrances
The ordinance bill partially amending the “Gwangju Seo-gu Ordinance on Creating a Smoke-Free Environment and Preventing Damage from Secondhand Smoke,” proposed by Assemblyman Kim Suyeong of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council at the 334th extraordinary session, passed the relevant standing committee on the 20th.
Through this amendment, Assemblyman Kim added new designated smoke-free areas (within 10 meters of hydrogen charging stations and subway entrances) and enabled the reduction of fines for residents who have received smoking cessation education or support services. This revision is expected to serve as a turning point, shifting health administration from a focus on enforcement to one centered on prevention and recovery.
Assemblyman Kim stated, “Smoking is not just a personal habit but an issue directly related to public safety and health. Through this amendment, we aim to create a safer living environment free from smoking and establish a smoke-free culture that all residents can truly experience.” He added, “We will pursue real change by combining education and support, rather than relying solely on enforcement and punishment.”
