Crackdown and Rescue by Cambodian Authorities
It was confirmed on October 20 that in Cambodia, where cases of employment scams and abduction or confinement targeting Koreans continue to occur, more than 10 Korean nationals have been arrested and 2 have been rescued.
Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with reporters at the Government Complex Seoul in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the same day and stated, "The Cambodian authorities have so far arrested more than 10 additional Korean nationals suspected of online scams, and separately, have rescued 2 Korean nationals."
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cambodian police conducted a crackdown on October 16 and arrested and detained more than 10 Korean nationals suspected of online scams. Separately, the Cambodian police rescued 2 Korean nationals. It is reported that the two rescued individuals are expected to return to Korea as early as this week.
Some of those arrested or rescued this time are believed to be among the more than 80 individuals whose safety had not been confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as of August. An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "The two people who were rescued are included in our statistics, and they were rescued after we received a report of their confinement. It has also been confirmed that among the more than 10 Korean nationals suspected of online scams, one had previously filed a report of being confined."
