Icheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced on October 20 that it will begin providing budget support this year to improve the science lab environments at elementary, middle, and high schools within the city.

This project is being implemented for the first time this year, reflecting feedback from a meeting with science teachers held during the process of attracting Icheon Science High School last year.
This year, the city will provide 50 million won each to five schools-Seolbong Elementary School, Moga Middle School, Icheon Middle School, Janghowon High School, and Hyoyang High School-for a total of 250 million won, fully funded by the city budget. The funds allocated to each school will be used for facility improvements such as electrical and plumbing work, as well as for the purchase of science equipment.
In particular, the city plans to open the renovated science labs to local students and utilize them as spaces for educational collaboration between schools through public classes and other activities. Going forward, the city intends to expand the number of beneficiary schools each year based on demand surveys.
Kim Kyunghee, Mayor of Icheon, stated, "This project aims to raise the overall level of science education in the region in line with the establishment of the science high school," adding, "By expanding learning spaces, we will work to establish Icheon as a central city for nurturing scientific talent."
