Jeong Cheongrae Orders Choo Mi-ae: "File Criminal Charges if People Power Party Obstructs Proceedings by Occupying Chairperson's Seat"

Order to Chairperson Choo Mi-ae
Warning Against Violating the National Assembly Advancement Act
"Criminal Action for Disrupting Proceedings"

Jeong Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, instructed Choo Mi-ae, chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee (also of the Democratic Party), on the 20th to file criminal charges under the National Assembly Advancement Act if members of the People Power Party obstruct the proceedings by approaching and occupying the chairperson's seat.

At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on this day, Jeong stated, "Yesterday, I told Chairperson Choo that any instance of approaching and occupying the chairperson's seat to disrupt the proceedings is clearly a violation of the National Assembly Advancement Act. I also strongly requested that if such behavior occurs again, criminal charges should be filed. I want to make it clear that I have made this request."

Jeong, who previously served as chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, recalled, "When I first took office as chairperson, there was an incident where members of the People Power Party rushed toward the chairperson's seat. At that time, I warned them that I would file criminal charges under the National Assembly Advancement Act. After that, People Power Party members no longer approached the chairperson's seat." He continued, "Now, it seems that disruptive acts have escalated to the point where the chairperson cannot conduct the meeting. Yesterday, I spoke with Chairperson Choo and told her that if anyone again approaches and occupies the chairperson's seat to disrupt the proceedings, I would request criminal charges be filed under the National Assembly Advancement Act."

After listing the relevant National Assembly laws, Jeong warned, "I understand that there are currently lawmakers on trial under this National Assembly Advancement Act. If criminal charges are filed again under this law, wouldn't there be aggravated punishment?" He added, "The reason I am saying this is not to threaten criminal prosecution, but to warn you not to engage in actions that could lead to criminal charges."
