"Personal Statements Written with ChatGPT Welcome": The Reason Behind the Stance of the U.S. Software Giant Known for PDFs

Adobe: "We Highly Value AI Proficiency"

Adobe, the American software company, has expressed a welcoming stance toward the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in application writing. While many companies have traditionally been negative about applicants using AI to draft personal statements, there is a growing trend of companies now viewing AI proficiency as a new work competency.

Recently, Stacey Martinet, Chief Communications Officer (CCO) of Adobe, stated in an interview with the U.S. media outlet Fortune, "We value people who not only list AI on their resumes but actually use it in practice."

Martinet emphasized, "AI is reshaping the way we communicate, market, and create," adding, "Those who possess both creative abilities and AI proficiency will have a competitive edge." She explained that the company prefers candidates who actively utilize AI in actual hiring tasks or mini-projects, rather than simply stating 'proficient in AI technology' on their resumes.

Adobe already operates its own educational program called the Digital Academy to help applicants develop digital, AI, and creative skills.

Martinet said, "If someone tells me they used AI to create content for their social media channels, I think that's outstanding," and further explained, "If a communications applicant drafts an initial version and then uses AI to receive revision suggestions and complete it, that would also be very impressive."

She also noted that while the door is open to job seekers with little AI experience, they will be required to use AI in their work after joining the company. Martinet stated, "We don't reject candidates just because they've never used AI, but once they're hired, they will definitely be expected to use it," adding, "AI is already changing the way we work." She continued, "Adaptability is key," and "Those who succeed are the ones who turn evolving technology into opportunities."

Additionally, she said, "This technology is opening up new possibilities that we have yet to imagine. The people who create those possibilities will be the ones shaping the future."

Growing Acceptance of AI Use in the U.S.: "Collaboration with AI Is Essential"

Adobe is not the only company reflecting AI proficiency as a hiring criterion. The American AI startup Anthropic also recently changed its policy to allow applicants to use AI to refine their resumes or personal statements. Previously, the company had required applicants to write personal statements without any AI assistance, but revised its policy in July this year, considering issues of fairness and bias.

Jimmy Gould, Head of Human Resources at Anthropic, stated, "This is an intentional change to establish a fair evaluation system using AI," and added, "We use Claude (an AI image generation software) every day, and we are looking for talent who can collaborate with AI."

However, global investment bank Goldman Sachs still maintains a conservative stance. The team responsible for recruiting for the Private Investing Academy in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region specified in an email sent to university students in June that "the use of external tools such as ChatGPT (a generative AI chatbot) or Google search engines is prohibited during the interview process."
