Meeting Between U.S. and North Korean Leaders Considered,
But No Concrete Plans for Summit
CNN reported on October 18 (local time) that U.S. President Donald Trump has been internally discussing the possibility of meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his scheduled trip to Asia next month.
Citing multiple U.S. government officials, CNN stated, "While the administration has considered a summit between the leaders of the United States and North Korea, no concrete plans or preparations have been made to actually pursue it."
According to sources, there is currently no direct contact between the United States and North Korea, unlike during President Trump's first term. Earlier this year, the United States attempted to deliver a letter to North Korea, but North Korea did not accept it and did not respond.
CNN added that, amid escalating tensions between the United States and China, the White House is placing greater emphasis on President Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during this Asia trip.
