According to the Gwangju Fire and Safety Headquarters and the police on October 18, a report was received at around 12:09 p.m. the previous day stating that "explosives have been planted on the playground of Middle School A in Nam District." Firefighters, police, and military units were immediately dispatched, evacuating hundreds of students and staff members. Bomb detection dogs were deployed to search both inside and outside the school, but nothing unusual was found.
The report was said to be a simple threat stating that explosives had been planted.
Previously, on October 13, emails were sent to three schools-High School B in Buk District and High Schools C and D in Nam District-claiming that "explosives have been planted and may explode." The police special forces and fire authorities responded, but all incidents turned out to be false alarms.
The police are investigating whether this incident is connected to the recent wave of threatening emails sent from Japan to major facilities across the country, and whether the same individual may be responsible.
