A Korean national wanted in connection with a 12 billion won romance scam in Cambodia, which involved impersonating celebrities, was reported to have died in the country four months ago.
According to the police and other sources on October 17, a Korean man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, who had been staying in Cambodia, passed away at a local hospital in early June. The cause of death was determined to be heart disease. The circumstances leading to the heart disease remain unknown.
Previously, the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency had identified Mr. A and issued an Interpol Red Notice (an international request for the arrest of a suspect). However, after being notified of Mr. A's death by diplomatic authorities, the police closed the case last month, citing "no right of prosecution."
The Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency has also taken measures such as issuing Red Notices and arrest warrants for 28 individuals, including the Korean ringleader couple and their accomplices, who are involved in the romance scam case and are currently in Cambodia.
