Reflecting 8th Administration’s Pledges:
New Pedestrian Overpass and Utilization of Long-Unsold Land
Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on October 17 that it will begin the public review process for the proposed changes to the Unjeong New Town district unit plan.
This revision aims to incorporate transportation improvement measures, such as the construction of new pedestrian overpasses and the addition of acceleration and deceleration lanes on major roads, which were campaign pledges of the 8th popularly elected administration. It also seeks to increase the utilization of idle land in Unjeong Districts 1 and 2 that have remained unsold for an extended period.
The main points include the construction of a new pedestrian overpass, a campaign pledge of the 8th administration, to improve pedestrian safety and access to the station area for residents of nearby neighborhoods such as Hanul and Sannae Village, in response to the increase in passengers using the GTX-A line. Additional acceleration and deceleration lanes will be installed on the north-south road in the GTX station area, and the road in front of Unjeong Station’s mixed-use complex will be expanded to alleviate traffic congestion.
In particular, the pedestrian overpass connecting Hanul Village and Sannae Village, a campaign pledge of the 8th administration, is scheduled to break ground at the end of this year and be completed and opened by the end of next year. Once the pedestrian overpass opens, the communities previously divided by the north-south road will be connected as one, and a safe and pleasant pedestrian environment will be created for all residents, including children and the elderly who are more vulnerable when walking.
Additionally, two public office sites in Unjeong Districts 1 and 2, which require a change of use due to administrative district reorganization (division) and the cancellation of plans to purchase land for a fire station, will be converted into community living facilities for residents. This is expected to strengthen local commercial districts and living infrastructure, thereby boosting urban vitality.
Kim Kyoungil, Mayor of Paju, stated, "With the opening of the GTX-A line marking a transportation revolution in the Seoul metropolitan area, we will reorganize the Unjeong New Town district unit plan to integrate Unjeong Districts 1, 2, and 3 into a single living zone and lay the foundation for realizing a self-sufficient city of one million residents."
Meanwhile, Paju City plans to review and supplement the opinions gathered through the public review and consultations with related agencies, and finalize and announce the changes to the Unjeong New Town district unit plan after deliberation by the Urban Planning and Architecture Joint Committee. Once these changes are completed, it is expected that transportation, commercial, and living infrastructure in Unjeong New Town will be comprehensively improved in line with the full-scale GTX-A era, significantly enhancing the city's competitiveness and urban vitality.
