Gwangju Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Muan Governor’s Declaration to Join Military Airport Relocation Task Force

Gwangju Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Muan Governor’s Declaration to Join Military Airport Relocation Task Force Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry building.

The Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed its support for Muan County Governor Kim San’s statement that he will participate in the “six-party consultative body (TF) for the relocation of the Gwangju military airport” without any preconditions.

On the 17th, the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry released a statement, saying, “Governor Kim San’s declaration is considered a highly meaningful step that provides new momentum to the previously stalled discussions on relocating the Gwangju military airport. In particular, his clear stance of ‘unconditional participation’ demonstrates a firm commitment to turning the airport relocation issue into an opportunity for cooperation aimed at balanced national development and regional coexistence.”

The statement continued, “For over half a century, the Gwangju military airport’s location within the city has posed significant obstacles to regional development, such as noise and height restrictions. Now, the issue has become a major national policy task, involving not only the resolution of local conflicts but also the redistribution of national security facilities and the enhancement of airport functions. Muan County’s clear intention to participate in the consultative body is expected to serve as a starting point for mutual development between Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, as well as an opportunity to restore trust between the regions.”

Additionally, the Chamber stated, “We hope that Gwangju City will further strengthen mutual trust through close communication and cooperation with Muan County, and play an active role in ensuring that discussions on the airport relocation lead to tangible results. We strongly urge the government, Gwangju City, South Jeolla Province, and other related agencies to promptly launch the six-party consultative body and move forward with substantive discussions.”
