Kia is taking the lead in building a smart city and achieving carbon neutrality in the local community through cooperation with Gwangmyeong City.
On October 17, Kia announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gwangmyeong City to promote electric vehicle-based community car sharing.
This business agreement was made as Kia participated as part of the Gwangmyeong City consortium in the "2024 Small and Medium Smart City Contest Project" organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The goal is to improve the efficiency of use for companies and ordinary citizens within the Gwangmyeong Station Knowledge Industry Center and to reduce carbon emissions during driving.
As part of the contest project, Gwangmyeong City is working to establish a "Gwangmyeong Station Area Carbon-Neutral Smart City" and will build solutions with each consortium in a total of four sectors: mobility, data, energy, and safety.
Kia will cooperate in the mobility sector, operating an electric vehicle-based community car sharing solution using "Kia Biz," Kia's eco-friendly vehicle sharing service.

Specifically, Kia and Gwangmyeong City will jointly select optimal business sites and build vehicle and platform infrastructure for the operation of the electric vehicle sharing service. They plan to provide stable electric vehicle sharing services for both business and personal use, and continuously improve service quality through maintenance of the platform and vehicles.
In addition, by linking service usage data with Gwangmyeong City's urban data platform, the actual carbon reduction effect compared to internal combustion engines will be objectively measured based on actual driving distance and transparently shared with citizens, thereby enhancing public interest and environmental value.
To this end, Kia will use "Gwangmyeong U-Planet Tower" near Gwangmyeong Station as a key hub, introducing five EV3 and EV4 vehicles as shared cars, and plans to add models such as PV5 and EV5 in the future.
These vehicles will be available for companies located in the Gwangmyeong Station Knowledge Industry Center to rent for business purposes during working hours, and will be accessible to all citizens outside of business hours.
A Kia official stated, "Based on stable business operations in the Gwangmyeong Station area, we will do our best to help reduce urban congestion and achieve carbon reduction."
