Korea University of Energy and Technology (KENTECH) announced on October 17 that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Naju City and the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) at the "Korea-Sweden Sustainable Partnership Summit" to establish a joint research hub in the fields of power semiconductors and clean energy.
The signing ceremony was attended by Park Jin-ho, Acting President of KENTECH; Yoon Byung-tae, Mayor of Naju; and Paul Halle Jarl Pedersen, Senior Vice President of RISE, as signatories. Also present as witnesses were Andreas Carlson, Sweden's Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, and Moon Sinhak, First Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden attended the opening ceremony and emphasized the value of bilateral cooperation between the two countries to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development.
RISE is a key institution in Sweden's innovation ecosystem, connecting policy, industry, and academia. It leads advancements in energy transition, eco-friendly technologies, and smart industry innovation, based on sustainability and digital transformation.
As a core research hub under this agreement, KENTECH will collaborate with RISE on research and development in advanced energy technology fields such as power semiconductors, smart grids, and renewable energy. Together with the Swedish National Research Institute and Naju City, KENTECH will establish an industry-academia-research cooperation model and operate a global talent development program. KENTECH also plans to set up a KENTECH-RISE joint research platform, where RISE researchers will be stationed at KENTECH.
Park Jin-ho, Acting President of KENTECH, stated, "This collaboration among RISE, Sweden's leading research institution, and Naju City is expected to generate significant synergy in joint research and talent development in key areas of the future energy industry, including power semiconductors, solid state transformers (SST), microgrids, and renewable energy."
