The government joint response team, which was urgently dispatched to address the frequent cases of job scams, abductions, and confinement targeting Korean nationals in Cambodia, will visit the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior to discuss countermeasures.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 17th, the joint response team, led by Second Vice Minister Kim Jina, plans to visit both the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior on this day. In the morning, they will meet with the Chief of the Cambodian National Police at the National Police Agency within the Ministry of Interior, as well as hold talks with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the afternoon, they will meet with the Minister of Interior.
Through these meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior, the response team will convey the South Korean government’s stance regarding the job scams, abductions, and confinement cases involving Korean nationals. They are also expected to discuss in detail issues such as the autopsy and repatriation of the remains of a university student who died due to torture in Cambodia, and the repatriation of detained Korean nationals.
The government joint response team had previously met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chhay Sinarith, Secretary-General of the Cambodian Committee on Online Scams (CCOS), the day before, to communicate the South Korean government’s position on the current situation. Prime Minister Hun expressed his condolences over the death of a Korean national, stating, “I regret that a Korean citizen has lost their life,” and added, “We will make greater efforts to apprehend suspects who are still at large and to protect Korean nationals in Cambodia.”
Meanwhile, according to foreign media reports, the Cambodian police announced plans to deport 59 detained Korean nationals as of the previous day.
