"Plastic Waste Recycling" Hyundai Motor Company Establishes Resource Circulation Facility in Indonesia

Indonesia Struggles with Plastic Waste
Hyundai Motor Company Opens Plastic Resource Circulation Facility in Bekasi

Hyundai Motor Company has established a community-led plastic resource circulation facility in Bekasi, Indonesia, and has begun creating a sustainable resource circulation ecosystem.

On October 16 (local time), Hyundai Motor Company held an opening ceremony for the "Community-Led Plastic Resource Circulation Facility" in Bekasi, Indonesia, the company announced on October 17. The event was attended by Bang Hyuncheol, head of Hyundai Motor Company's Indonesian production subsidiary, Dedi Mulyadi, Governor of West Java, Indonesia, and other key officials.

Indonesia ranks third in the world in terms of plastic waste generation due to rapid urbanization and population growth, which has intensified environmental and social issues.

In 2022, Hyundai Motor Company established a recycling center in Bekasi, Indonesia, where its production plant is located. This year, the company has further expanded its efforts to address the plastic waste problem by opening an additional plastic resource circulation facility.

The resource circulation facility not only provides environmental education and produces goods for local residents, as the existing recycling center does, but also performs various functions such as collecting waste plastic, washing and crushing, and producing and selling recycled materials.

In particular, the local residents' cooperative participates in the entire operation of the facility, and the profits generated are reinvested into the resource circulation facility. Hyundai Motor Company, in cooperation with Good Neighbors, is responsible for forming the local residents' cooperative, recruiting personnel, and providing operational training. The company also plans to offer systematic recycling education for local residents in partnership with local waste plastic raw material suppliers.

A Hyundai Motor Company representative stated, "The establishment of this resource circulation facility is significant in that it creates a circular structure by converting waste into raw materials," adding, "Hyundai Motor Company will continue to strive to address environmental issues in local communities based on various cooperative frameworks."
