Vice Minister Gu Hyukchae Sets Goal of 118 Research Site Visits

"Will Lead the Development of an AI Science Environment"

On October 16, Gu Hyuk-chae, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, visited the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology to observe the site of AI-based research innovation and held a meeting with key researchers. This marks the seventh field visit under the "Project Empathy 118," which aims for a total of 118 site visits.

During the visit, Vice Minister Gu discussed strategies for research innovation through the convergence of science, technology, and AI. At the institute's automated chemical materials research laboratory, he observed laboratory robots automating chemical material synthesis experiments and processing data in real time, enabling uninterrupted research 24 hours a day.


In the subsequent meeting, researchers from government-funded institutes and universities introduced domestic and international examples of automated and autonomous laboratories. They also discussed the establishment of AI autonomous laboratories to automate and advance research and development, the development of AI Co-Scientists that can propose research methods, analyze research results, and assist with scientific reasoning.


Vice Minister Gu stated, "The convergence of AI and science and technology is a key driver for Korea to become one of the world's top three AI powerhouses and top five science and technology leaders." He added, "We will actively support innovation in AI-based research and development to create an environment where researchers can work creatively and efficiently alongside AI."
