During the morning commute on October 16, users experienced inconvenience as access to YouTube and YouTube Music was unstable for a period of time. This access error occurred not only in South Korea but also in various parts of the world, suggesting it was a global issue.
According to the IT industry on October 16, starting around 8:00 a.m., some domestic users experienced disruptions in YouTube video playback and YouTube Music streaming.
This access disruption affected both the mobile application and the PC webpage. When users clicked on a YouTube video, they received an error message and the video would not play. Similarly, YouTube Music displayed an error message and would not play music tracks.
Following the access disruption, Google Korea announced on its official blog, "Around 8:00 a.m. on October 16, some users experienced issues with YouTube and YouTube Music not functioning properly," adding, "We will provide updates as soon as the issue is resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience."
However, starting around 9:10 a.m. on the same day, access to YouTube and YouTube Music, as well as video and music playback, returned to normal. A Google representative stated, "Service was restored at 9:34 a.m. Korean time. The cause is currently under investigation."
The error was reported not only in South Korea but also overseas, raising the possibility that it was a global issue. In fact, several foreign media outlets also reported on the YouTube access disruption.
The New Zealand Herald reported, "YouTube appears to display an error message and does not function when clicking on videos. There have been more than 1,600 related reports in New Zealand since midnight, and the number continues to rise. This phenomenon is also occurring in the United States, Turkey, and Europe."
There were also numerous reports of access disruptions in the United States, where YouTube's headquarters is located. According to Downdetector, an online service outage tracking site, up to 380,000 error reports were received in the United States alone between approximately 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on October 16. This site aggregates user reports and its own metrics to provide information on service availability. Users repeatedly reported that, even when accessing YouTube, videos were not playing properly.
Previously, on September 14 and June 13, some users had also experienced access disruptions on YouTube. On May 6, there was an error in which the YouTube Music app did not function properly for iPhone users running the iOS operating system.
