The Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters will hold the "1st Gyeonggi Fire Department 119 Memorial Day" on October 19 at the former provincial government office site in Suwon. This event has been organized to honor the sacrifice of fallen firefighters together with the residents of Gyeonggi Province and to promote a culture of remembrance in daily life.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a conversation with bereaved families and a flower-laying ceremony. The memorial ceremony will follow, featuring tribute speeches by key guests and the release of a memorial video that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to restore the appearances of fallen firefighters during their lifetimes.
In addition, a memorial walk will take place along a 750-meter route from the provincial office lawn to the Provincial Office Five-way Intersection. The walk will include bereaved families, guests, members of the 119 Youth Group, new trainees, and local residents. The fire department honor guard, along with a traditional music and military band, will lead the procession, creating a solemn atmosphere. Safety personnel and traffic control will be present along the entire route.
The provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters will also set up an exhibition space featuring content that highlights the lives of fallen firefighters, as well as a "Message Wall" where residents can leave their own messages of remembrance.
Furthermore, to allow residents to directly experience a culture of safety, more than 50 hands-on programs will be offered, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) demonstrations, and rescue dog demonstrations, all designed for children and families to participate together.
Choi Yongcheol, head of the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "The sacrifice of firefighters is not just a matter of record, but a value that must be remembered in our daily lives. I hope this event, held together with the residents, will serve as an opportunity to honor the firefighting community and put a culture of safety into practice."
