Sunchang County, North Jeolla Province, will host the 20th Sunchang Jangryu Festival for three days from October 17 to 19 at the Sunchang Traditional Gochujang Folk Village and the Fermentation Theme Park.
According to the county on October 15, this year's festival, under the theme "The Colors of Sunchang, Coloring the World," will feature a wide range of hands-on experiences, performances, and food that span generations, providing an opportunity to fully enjoy the unique flavors and culture of Sunchang.
At the festival venue, visitors can participate in engaging experiential programs such as "Find the Golden Meju," "Coming of Age: You and I," "Find the Jangchu King," and "Gochu Stem Speed Challenge." There will also be a fireworks display to celebrate the 20th anniversary, a "Catch! Tinyping" performance, a youth film festival, and a variety of attractions for families.
The festival grounds will feature a food market where visitors can taste local specialties such as gochujang bulgogi, as well as a direct sales market for local agricultural products operated by regional farmers. Efforts have also been made to transition to an eco-friendly festival by promoting the use of reusable containers and strengthening waste separation and recycling.
For the convenience of residents and tourists, the county will expand the operation of circular shuttle buses connecting 11 towns and townships, and a dedicated shuttle bus will also run from the public stadium. Joint safety inspections have been completed with relevant agencies, including the police, fire department, gas, and electricity authorities. During the festival, a disaster safety control center will be in operation to ensure the thorough safety of all visitors.
In particular, more than 30,000 chrysanthemums will be arranged throughout the Fermentation Theme Park, Pangyi Park, and the Folk Village, adding to the autumn atmosphere. A chrysanthemum photo garden, featuring heart-shaped sculptures and jangdokdae photo zones, is expected to become a popular spot for memorable photos among visitors.
Choi Youngil, the county governor, stated, "This year's Sunchang Jangryu Festival has been prepared as a participatory event connecting generations to mark its 20th anniversary. I hope it will be a special time for everyone to experience the rich flavors of Sunchang's fermented foods and culture, and to feel the warmth of Sunchang's community spirit."
