High Marks Across All Areas Including Local Government Cooperation, Commitment to Educational Innovation, and Policy Dissemination
Secures Up to 3 Billion KRW in Additional Project Funding
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seokjun) has received the highest grade, Grade A, in the “Educational Development Special Zone Pilot Area Performance Evaluation” conducted by the Ministry of Education.
Since being jointly designated as an “Educational Development Special Zone Pilot Area” with Busan Metropolitan City in February, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has actively pursued region-led educational innovation initiatives under the goal of making Busan “the best city for raising and educating children.”
The “Educational Development Special Zone” is a system in which local governments and education offices cooperate to comprehensively support local talent development and improve residential conditions. It is gaining attention as a model for region-driven educational innovation.
The Ministry of Education evaluated 56 pilot areas nationwide across five domains and 13 sub-indicators: ▲establishment of cooperative governance between local governments and education offices; ▲execution and management of special grants; ▲commitment to local educational innovation; ▲performance management systems; and ▲dissemination of best practices. In particular, considering that these initiatives are in the early stages, the evaluation focused on foundational areas such as building cooperative systems and demonstrating a commitment to innovation.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, in cooperation with Busan Metropolitan City, received high marks for: ▲systematic operation of high-level and working-level consultative bodies; ▲balanced allocation of special grant funds; ▲stable securing of matching local funds; ▲implementation of participatory policies involving both educational sites and the local community; and ▲branding and nationwide dissemination of policies.
As a result, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has secured up to 3 billion KRW in additional project funding from the Ministry of Education and plans to further strengthen the regional Educational Development Special Zone initiatives going forward.
Superintendent Kim Seokjun stated, “This achievement is the result of cooperation among Busan Metropolitan City, local universities, and the educational field,” adding, “We will work closely with local governments to foster local talent and improve residential conditions, making Busan the best city for raising and educating children.”
