On October 15, Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Park Hyungdeok) announced that, as a result of the 2024 Education Development Special Zone pilot area performance evaluation, it had been promoted from a "Management Area" to a "Leading Area," securing an additional project budget of 500 million KRW.

The Education Development Special Zone pilot project is a policy being promoted by the Ministry of Education since 2024 to strengthen local educational capacity and improve residential conditions. Through two rounds of designations in February and July last year, 56 pilot areas nationwide have been classified and supported as either "Leading Areas" or "Management Areas."
After being designated as a Management Area in the first round of selections in February 2024, Dongducheon City has actively pursued improvements in the educational environment and innovative educational initiatives.
This performance evaluation was a comprehensive assessment by the Ministry of Education of the results of project implementation in pilot areas nationwide during 2024. Dongducheon City was promoted to a Leading Area in recognition of its achievements in establishing an outstanding multicultural education model, implementing a hub-based care policy, and building a regional cooperation system. In particular, the city received an excellent evaluation among Management Areas, resulting in the achievement of securing an additional project budget of 500 million KRW.
Dongducheon City plans to accelerate efforts for official designation as an Education Development Special Zone, using this promotion to Leading Area and the additional project budget as an opportunity to further its development as a sustainable educational city.
