Special Inspections Conducted at 249 Sites During International Events
On October 15, Gwangju City announced that it had conducted a special inspection of 249 business sites vulnerable to environmental pollution, in order to support the successful hosting of major international events such as the World Archery Championships and the Gwangju Design Biennale. As a result of the inspection, the city uncovered 15 businesses that violated relevant laws and regulations.
This inspection focused on preventing pollution activities that threaten citizens’ health and a pleasant living environment in advance, such as offensive odors, illegal waste dumping, and unauthorized discharge of water pollutants. The main areas of enforcement included pollution of public water bodies, operation of unauthorized emission facilities, improper operation of prevention facilities, and illegal waste disposal.
As a result of the enforcement, a business in Buk-gu was found to have illegally discharged sewage into a public river without passing it through a private sewage treatment facility. In Gwangsan-gu, a livestock company released leachate generated from storing livestock manure compost into a river. Another company in Gwangsan-gu was found to have failed to report waste processing, among various other violations.
For the 15 businesses where violations were confirmed, the city will notify the relevant district offices of minor violations and request administrative action. For eight locations where serious illegal activities were identified, the city plans to conduct its own investigation and refer the cases to the prosecution.
Kim Junyoung, Director of Citizen Safety, emphasized, "We will strengthen enforcement against environmental pollution activities that threaten citizens' health and, through continuous public awareness and guidance, do our utmost to create 'Gwangju, the City of Opportunity Shining for Tomorrow,' where citizens can live with peace of mind."
