Searched for "lethal" and "incapacitating" drug combinations
Charged with first-degree attempted murder and other offenses
In North Carolina, United States, a woman has been arrested on charges of attempting to poison her husband by mixing toxic substances into his energy drink. It was revealed that prior to the crime, she used OpenAI's artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, to search for combinations of poisonous substances.
Recently, the New York Post reported that Cheryl Harris Gates, a 43-year-old occupational therapist residing in North Carolina, was arrested on October 11 (local time) for allegedly mixing drugs designed to induce unconsciousness or incapacitation into her husband's energy drink in an attempt to render him unconscious.
According to the police investigation, between July 8 and September 29, Gates used ChatGPT to search for combinations of drugs that could be injected or ingested and were described as "lethal" or "incapacitating."
Court documents also revealed evidence that Gates had actually researched and purchased related substances and attempted to carry out her plan.
Police discovered evidence at Gates's residence, including syringes, a capsule filler, droppers, scales, and various pharmaceuticals.
The victim, her husband, stated that he found foreign substances and controlled substances mixed in his drinks on two occasions, July 12 and August 18, and subsequently experienced symptoms of paralysis. At the time, the couple was living separately.
According to local media outlet WBTV, Gates was employed as an occupational therapist in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Gates is currently charged with first-degree attempted murder and food or beverage contamination.
She was also arrested on October 8 on charges of stalking and property damage after attaching a tracking device to her husband's vehicle and damaging a window.
She was released on bail after the first arrest, but bail was not granted following the second arrest.
