Absorbs and Stores Light to Glow on Its Own
A Solution Gaining Attention for Assisting Evacuation During Emergencies
On October 15, KCC announced the launch of its new photoluminescent paint, "Lumisafe," which absorbs and stores light and then emits it in dark environments.
Lumisafe absorbs ultraviolet and visible light from sources such as sunlight or lamps, and then emits visible light in the dark, enabling it to glow on its own for a certain period. This feature can help secure the "golden time" for evacuation during emergencies when visibility is compromised due to power outages, fires, or flooding. Currently, it is being piloted in the Sillim-Bongcheon Tunnel in Seoul.
KCC developed Lumisafe in response to the increasing number of large apartment complexes and underground parking spaces, aiming to minimize casualties during emergencies. While many underground parking lots are equipped with emergency lighting and guidance signs, some emergency lights rely on regular power supply and can only operate for a limited time on their built-in batteries during power outages.
Lumisafe offers excellent adhesion and weather resistance, allowing it to be applied to various surfaces such as walls, floors, and columns made of materials like metal and concrete. It can also be custom-designed in various shapes, such as arrows or human figures, making it suitable as a point design element that utilizes its luminous properties. In addition to outdoor use, KCC has obtained an indoor air quality certificate to ensure it can be safely used inside public facilities and residential buildings.
KCC expects Lumisafe to gain attention as a new solution that facilitates quick and safe evacuation. A company representative stated, "We will continue to develop solutions that can be used in various spaces in line with safety enhancement policies and on-site needs."
