Kyobo Bookstore, in collaboration with the Daesan Foundation, will host the "2025 Conversation with World Writers" event on October 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Daesan Hall on the 23rd floor of the Kyobo Building in Gwanghwamun, featuring Indian author Amitav Ghosh as a special guest.
This conversation will be conducted as a dialogue with critic Park Hyejin and is supported by the Toji Cultural Foundation and Kyobo Life Insurance. The discussion will offer a broad overview of Amitav Ghosh’s literary evolution, spanning from his early works to his most recent publications, under the theme "Rewriting Erased Names."
Amitav Ghosh was born in 1956 in Kolkata, India, and spent his childhood in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He received the Prix M?dicis ?tranger in 1990 for his debut novel "The Circle of Reason." Ghosh is renowned for delicately portraying individual lives amid turbulent historical contexts in works such as "The Glass Palace," "Sea of Poppies," "River of Smoke," and "Flood of Fire."
In recent years, he has raised his voice on social issues through nonfiction works that expose the causes of environmental destruction and the climate crisis, including "The Great Derangement" and "The Nutmeg’s Curse."
Solidifying his status as a globally acclaimed novelist and thinker, Amitav Ghosh is visiting Korea this year as the recipient of the 14th Park Kyung-ni Literary Award, at the invitation of the Toji Cultural Foundation.
The Park Kyung-ni Literary Award jury stated, "Amitav Ghosh is a writer whose works demonstrate how historical experiences continue to influence contemporary identities and social structures through non-linear narrative structures. We highly value his literary contributions, which have broadened the horizons of postcolonial and ecological literature and have earnestly captured the voices of marginalized subjects, including nature itself."
Applications to attend this Conversation with World Writers can be submitted through the Kyobo Bookstore website and the Daesan Foundation homepage. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and simultaneous interpretation in Korean and English will be provided on-site. The event will also be released through the Daesan Foundation’s YouTube channel.
