Support for 30 Underground Charging Stations
50% Relocation Cost Subsidy, Up to 1.5 Million Won per Unit
Addressing Public Safety Concerns
On October 14, Gongju City in South Chungcheong Province announced that it will actively promote the “Support Project for Relocating Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities from Underground to Aboveground” in order to fundamentally eliminate the risk of fires that may occur at electric vehicle charging stations located in underground parking lots. The city aims to address the limitations of fire suppression in underground structures and to create a safe environment for the use of eco-friendly vehicles.
The city has recently observed a rapid increase in the adoption of electric vehicles and, in light of growing concerns over major accidents caused by fires during charging in underground parking lots, has launched a proactive safety initiative that prioritizes citizen safety.
This project provides support for relocating charging facilities from underground to aboveground spaces, where fires can be extinguished more quickly in the event of an emergency.
The program will support a total of 30 units. For apartment complexes that move charging stations from underground to aboveground, the city will subsidize 50% of the total costs-including relocation, construction, and charging zone painting-up to a maximum of 1.5 million won per unit.
Applications will be accepted until November 28. Interested apartment complexes can check the “Announcements/Notices” section on the Gongju City Hall website or contact the Environmental Facilities Team of the Environmental Protection Division for more information.
Oh Hongseok, head of the Environmental Protection Division of Gongju City, stated, “Public anxiety about fire accidents during electric vehicle parking and charging is increasing. Through this support project, we aim to create a safer and more reliable charging infrastructure environment.”
