On October 14, the Gyeonggi-do Economic Science Promotion Agency published the "Research Report on the Development Plan for National Strategic Technologies in Gyeonggi-do," which outlines strategies for fostering national strategic technology sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), secondary batteries, and biotechnology.
The report, based on expert analysis and the specialization of national research and development (R&D) investments, proposes that eight key technologies should be prioritized for development: ▲Semiconductors and displays (high-performance and low-power AI semiconductors, next-generation sensors, materials, components, and equipment), ▲Artificial intelligence (advanced modeling, trustworthy and safe AI, industrial innovation AI), and ▲Advanced mobility (autonomous driving, electric and hydrogen vehicles), among others.
These eight key technologies are closely linked to the industrial structure of Gyeonggi-do and are expected to have a significant ripple effect. In the case of semiconductors and displays, the concentration of global companies and the synergy of mega-clusters are anticipated to drive widespread achievements. For artificial intelligence, the corporate and talent base in Pangyo is expected to accelerate industrial innovation. Advanced mobility is projected to expedite demonstration and commercialization based on the region's value chain and infrastructure.

The agency recommended that Gyeonggi-do focus and concentrate support on key areas to foster national strategic technologies, establish an industry-academia-research-government cooperation system based on regional technology innovation hubs, and strengthen institutional foundations such as enacting ordinances.
In addition, the agency called for the establishment of implementation systems, including talent development programs, industry-academia-research cooperation networks, and expanded R&D investment, to support these efforts.
Kim Hyungon, President of the agency, stated, "National strategic technologies are the core foundation of national competitiveness, and Gyeonggi-do can become the central hub for fostering Korea's strategic technologies based on its industrial and innovation environment. We will actively support efforts to enhance Gyeonggi-do's technological competitiveness by strengthening the capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises and expanding the foundation for cooperation."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi-do is home to 35.6% of Korea's manufacturing companies and 31.7% of its workforce. The proportion of R&D spending related to national strategic technologies stands at 14% (969 billion won), and the province boasts the largest number of specialized production technology research institutes (36%) and company-affiliated research institutes (32%) in the country.
