Evaluating Disaster Response from a Citizen’s Perspective
Dong-Eui Science University (President Kim Youngdo) announced on October 13 that students from the Department of Fire Safety Management participated in the '2025 READY Korea 3rd Training' held at Gangseo Sports Park on September 24. Through this event, they evaluated disaster response systems from a citizen’s perspective and enhanced their understanding of on-site operations.

This training was co-hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Busan City, and Gangseo District. It was designed to prepare for the autumn season, when local festivals and performances are concentrated, by simulating a complex disaster scenario in which an explosion, fire, and crowd crush accident occur simultaneously inside a performance venue.
Notably, this was the first government-wide joint inspection training conducted since crowd crush accidents were included as a disaster type, making it particularly significant.
The training involved 25 related organizations, including fire departments, police, military, and local governments. Students from the Department of Fire Safety Management at Dong-Eui Science University participated as simulated victims alongside citizens.
The students experienced realistic training scenarios, including evacuating during a performance venue fire and rescue operations in crowded situations. They participated in initial fire suppression and audience evacuation, search and rescue using helicopters, rescue dogs, and drones, as well as special military unit deployment and the rescue of isolated individuals.
Kim Dongjin, a student in the Department of Fire Safety Management, shared, "Experiencing a crowd crush accident site firsthand, which I had only seen in the news, made me realize how important response manuals and on-site control are. Understanding the perspective of evacuees will be a great asset as I continue my studies in disaster safety."
Byun Taeyoung, head of the Department of Fire Safety Management, stated, "The best disaster experts must possess not only rescue skills but also empathy to understand the feelings of people in disaster situations. I am confident that this training provided students with a valuable opportunity to view the site through the eyes of citizens. We will further strengthen field-oriented, multidimensional education."
The Department of Fire Safety Management at Dong-Eui Science University operates fire and evacuation simulation and disaster response practice-based education, aiming to nurture talent with practical field skills and safety leadership. The department is also working to spread a culture of safety among citizens through collaborative programs with the local community.
