President Lee Jaemyung has ordered a thorough and unrestricted investigation into the alleged external pressure on customs drug investigations. Ahead of his administration’s first parliamentary audit, he also urged all government ministries to actively cooperate regardless of party affiliation, and to proactively clarify any misunderstandings, fabrications, or slander that may arise.
The Office of the President announced in a statement from the spokesperson’s office that President Lee had called for a more rigorous investigation by the joint prosecution-police team currently established at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office regarding the “alleged external pressure on customs drug investigations.”
In particular, President Lee instructed that Superintendent Baek Haeryong, who has raised the allegations, be dispatched to the joint investigation team. The spokesperson’s office conveyed that President Lee ordered the reinforcement of the investigation team by sending Superintendent Baek Haeryong, and directed Chief Prosecutor Lim Eunjeong of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office, who is in charge of the investigation, to add more prosecutors if necessary. He emphasized that the team must thoroughly uncover the substantive truth behind all allegations and conduct a strict and independent investigation without exceptions, regardless of rank or status.
Additionally, President Lee instructed all ministries to actively cooperate in the National Assembly’s audit, which begins on October 13, regardless of party lines, and to proactively clarify any misunderstandings, fabrications, or slander that may arise during the audit.
President Lee stated, “Any issues raised during the audit that can be addressed should be acted upon immediately, and all ministries must actively accept the National Assembly’s recommendations, regardless of party affiliation.” He warned, “If there are cases where valid criticisms are neglected without reason, there will be strict accountability.” He further stressed, “Any failure to address issues pointed out during last year’s audit will also be subject to accountability without exception.”
The spokesperson’s office added that President Lee instructed ministries to proactively clarify any misunderstandings, fabrications, or slander that may arise during the audit process.
