2028 Seoul National University Regular Admissions: 1.6 Average Grade Required in First CSAT Stage, Fiercer Competition Among Top Students

Jongro Academy Analyzes 2028 Seoul National University Freshman Admissions Process

It is expected that competition among top-performing students will become even more intense in the 2028 Seoul National University regular admissions, in which current first-year high school students will participate. This is due to the introduction of percentile scores instead of standardized scores for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), as well as the transition to a five-level grading system for school records.

Jongro Academy announced on the 12th that this outlook is based on its analysis of the main points of the 2028 freshman admissions process recently released by Seoul National University.

For the 2028 admissions, Seoul National University will select three times the number of final successful applicants in the first stage of the regular admissions process, based solely on CSAT scores. In the second stage, it will combine 60% CSAT scores and 40% academic competency evaluation to determine the final successful candidates. Currently, in the first stage, Seoul National University selects twice the number of final successful applicants based on standardized scores. However, starting in 2028, the process will shift to selecting three times the number of applicants using grade scores, and in the second stage, percentile scores from the CSAT will be used instead of standardized scores.

Jongro Academy predicts that to pass the first stage, applicants will need to have an average grade of 1.6 or higher across the five CSAT subjects: Korean, Mathematics, English, Inquiry, and Korean History.

In the second stage, with the current nine-level school grading system being replaced by a five-level system in 2028, it is expected that many students will achieve the highest grade in all subjects, leading to fierce competition among students with an average grade of 1.2 or higher.

Lim Seongho, CEO of Jongro Academy, stated, "Going forward, admission to Seoul National University will likely be determined by the percentile score on the CSAT among students who are within the top grade for school records. In situations where many students have the same school grade, ultimately those with superior CSAT scores are expected to be admitted."
