Winner of the Theater Award at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards
Shedding Light on the Life of Independence Activist Hyun Miok
Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced on October 10 that the play 'To My Son (Subtitle: Miok Alice Hyun)' will be staged as the October special performance at the Taebaek Culture & Arts Center. The play will be performed at 7:00 p.m. on October 31 in the main theater of the Taebaek Culture & Arts Center.
This production has been selected for the 2025 Performing Arts Regional Distribution Support Project by the Arts Management Support Center. It is a work that won both the Theater Award and the Acting Award at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards. The play sheds light on the life of independence activist Hyun Miok (Alice Hyun), reinterpreting the turbulent era from the Japanese colonial period to the division of Korea from a female perspective.
Hyun Miok is the daughter of independence activist Hyun Soon. She was born in 1903 in Hawaii, United States, studied in China and Japan, and dedicated herself to the independence movement across China, Russia, the United States, and Japan.
The play opens with Miok, masked, facing a summary trial on the coast of Chongjin, North Hamgyong Province. Through an interview with a journalist who has come to cover her, the story follows her extraordinary birth and dramatic life. It revisits Miok’s life, who, despite being swept up in political circumstances beyond her control, never hesitated to pursue any path for women’s liberation and independence.
The cast includes accomplished actors such as Woo Mihwa, as well as Nam Kwona, who gained recognition for her roles as a housekeeper in the dramas 'Reply 1988' and 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' Together, they are expected to deliver a highly polished performance.
In addition, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, an archival exhibition will be held in the lobby, exploring the life of independence activist Hyun Miok and the production process of the play. The exhibition will reflect the atmosphere of the early 1900s, providing citizens with an opportunity to reflect once again on the significance of national independence.
The performance is open to middle school students and older. All seats are priced at 10,000 won (limited to six tickets per person). Members of the Cultural Love Association can purchase tickets on-site at the Taebaek Culture & Arts Center office for 7,000 won starting at 9:00 a.m. on October 14. General ticket sales will begin at 9:00 a.m. on October 15 through NOL Interpark Ticket (search 'Taebaek') and on-site at the venue.
Meanwhile, the final production among the six performances selected for the 2025 Performing Arts Regional Distribution Support Project, the ballet 'The Nutcracker,' will be held at 7:00 p.m. on November 28 at the main theater of the Taebaek Culture & Arts Center.
