Exhibition Space Established in Citizens' Hall
On October 10, Changwon Special City established an exhibition space in the Citizens' Hall at City Hall, where photos of former mayors of Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae prior to the integration, as well as mayors of the integrated Changwon City, are displayed together. A photo plaque unveiling ceremony was also held.
This event was organized to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the launch of integrated Changwon City. It aims to honor the former mayors who have devoted themselves to the development of the city from the days of Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae to the present, while providing an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the region's history together. For reference, there were 16 former Changwon mayors, 36 former Masan mayors, 23 former Jinhae mayors, and 4 integrated Changwon mayors.
Since being designated as a national industrial complex in 1974, Changwon has grown into a symbolic city of South Korea's industrialization. Masan, which opened its port in 1899, developed as an export port and played a leading role in the Korean economy, serving as a center for labor movements and democratization. Jinhae has served as a key city for naval operations and military security since the early 20th century.
The unique identities of these three cities merged in July 2010 to create integrated Changwon City. With expanded administrative and fiscal autonomy as a large city, it has further developed into what is now known as Changwon Special City.
Jang Geumyong, acting mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, "The photo plaques unveiled today represent both the roots and the starting point for the future of integrated Changwon City. We will continue to honor the spirit of unity among Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae, and strive to build a better Changwon City based on the legacy of the past."
