Customized Learning Programs Gain Nationwide Recognition

Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Heeyoung), announced on October 10 that it had achieved the distinction of winning both the 22nd Korea Lifelong Learning Awards, hosted by the Ministry of Education, and the 14th National Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Painting Contest, organized by the National Institute for Lifelong Education.

This achievement is the result of customized lifelong learning programs promoted in collaboration with local residents, which have received high praise nationwide and demonstrate Yongsan-gu’s accomplishments in the field of lifelong education. The district has been spreading a culture of lifelong learning through various initiatives, such as the resident talent-sharing program “Seoroseoro School” and the lifelong learning center’s “Korean Language and Literacy Class.”

“Seoroseoro School,” which received the Excellence Award at the 22nd Korea Lifelong Learning Awards, is a resident-led program in which community members become instructors and run educational courses. By offering free tuition and instructor fees, the program has fostered a culture where anyone can freely learn and teach. Since 2015, it has operated 275 courses, producing 3,144 students and 217 instructors.

At the 14th National Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Painting Contest, Kang Geumrye, a senior student at the Yongsan-gu Lifelong Learning Center’s Korean Language and Literacy Class, received the “Geulbom Award” (Director of the National Institute for Lifelong Education Award). Her work, “I Gained an Eye I Never Had,” was selected as an outstanding piece in the contest themed “Literacy, The World Looks Different Now.” The piece conveyed hope and the joy of learning in everyday life, moving many people.

Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, “This achievement is the result of residents and the local community supporting each other’s learning and growing together,” and added, “We will continue to expand lifelong learning opportunities so that all residents can enjoy more learning and happiness in their daily lives.”

Since being designated as a Lifelong Learning City by the Ministry of Education in 2016, a UNESCO Global Learning City in 2018, and an IAEC International Education City in 2022, Yongsan-gu has been creating an environment where learning is possible anytime and anywhere. The district is also leading efforts to improve residents’ quality of life through customized programs for each generation.
