Jungnang District Launches Nation’s First AI Real-Time Translation Website

Supports Four Languages
Enhancing Administrative Accessibility for Foreign Residents

On October 10, Jungnang District in Seoul (District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi) announced that it has begun pilot operation of a "real-time translation website" based on generative artificial intelligence (AI), the first of its kind among district offices nationwide. This initiative aims to improve accessibility so that foreign residents and visitors can access district information without language barriers.

Until now, the district has operated a separate foreign language website. However, with an increasing number of residents and tourists from diverse cultural backgrounds, the need for a more intuitive and real-time multilingual communication system has emerged. In response, the district has introduced an AI-based translation system.

The "real-time translation service" has been in pilot operation since October 1 and will transition to official service in November. Initially, it will be applied to the district office’s official website and the "Open District Mayor’s Office" website, supporting four languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese.

Users can click the "language selection box" at the top right corner of the website screen to view the site in their chosen language, and the selected language will remain even when navigating to other menus. New posts are also automatically translated and reflected in real time.

The generative AI translation applied this time goes beyond simple literal translation by understanding context and converting content into natural vocabulary, allowing foreign users to comprehend the information as if it were written in their native language.

To further improve translation quality, the district is considering introducing text-to-speech (TTS) and image translation features. There are also plans to add more high-demand languages and expand the service to various department websites, including the public health center and "Jungnang Companion Love Net."

Ryu Gyeonggi, Mayor of Jungnang District, stated, "With this translation service, an environment has been created where foreigners can easily access Jungnang’s administrative information," adding, "We will continue to pursue digital-based administrative innovation so that everyone can access information without discrimination."
