Signature Dishes from Local Restaurants Served in District Cafeteria
Regular Monthly Events Planned Starting Next Year
Dongjak District in Seoul (District Mayor Park Ilha) is launching the "Local Coexistence Project," which aims to discover and promote hidden neighborhood restaurants. This project involves introducing signature dishes from lesser-known local eateries at the district office cafeteria, where employees can sample the food and spread the word. The initiative was designed to foster mutual growth with small business owners and revitalize the local commercial district.
On October 1, the district selected "Yangcheolbuk," located on Manyang-ro in Noryangjin 1-dong, as the first participant in the project. Yangcheolbuk supplied 500 servings of its signature dish, "O-Sam Bokkeum" (stir-fried squid and pork), to the district cafeteria, where it was prepared and served to employees. This allowed staff to enjoy a menu item typically only available at the restaurant, right at their workplace cafeteria.
Employees were able to enjoy these restaurant-quality dishes at cafeteria prices, while the restaurant benefited from increased sales through bulk orders. Staff responded enthusiastically, saying, "I want to visit Yangcheolbuk with my colleagues," and "I'm looking forward to trying other local specialties in the future."
Building on this success, the district plans to make the project a regular event at least once a month starting next year. To expand participation and discover new local favorites, Dongjak District will invite restaurants capable of providing at least 500 servings to apply, and will also accept recommendations from residents.
Park Ilha, Mayor of Dongjak District, stated, "The Local Coexistence Project is a win-win initiative that helps promote hidden neighborhood gems and supports small business owners. We will continue to develop and implement policies to revitalize the local economy."
