30th Anniversary of the Adoption of the "Beijing Declaration" This Year
The World Women Leaders Summit will be held in Beijing, China from October 13 to 14.
Guo Jiaqun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced at a regular press briefing on October 9 that "dozens of heads of state and government, parliamentary elders, deputy prime ministers, ministers from various departments, leaders of international organizations, and distinguished guests will attend the World Women Leaders Summit."
At the opening ceremony on October 13, Xi Jinping, President of China, will attend and deliver a keynote speech. Previously, President Xi participated virtually in the United Nations high-level meeting in 2020 commemorating the 25th anniversary of the World Conference on Women, where he proposed hosting the World Women Leaders Summit in 2025.
Spokesperson Guo explained, "This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing Conference)." He added, "Thirty years ago, the Beijing Conference adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, setting a milestone in the advancement of women's issues worldwide."
The Beijing Declaration is an international declaration adopted at the United Nations World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995. It contains 361 action items across 12 areas concerning gender equality and women's rights.
Spokesperson Guo stated, "The purpose of this summit is to review the spirit of the Beijing World Conference on Women and to urge all parties to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action." He added, "It will inject new momentum into promoting global gender equality and the comprehensive advancement of women, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for humanity."
