Small Rest Area Planned for Daesogang Village in Sancheok-myeon
New Community Space to Replace Aging Facility for Residents

On October 9, the Sancheok-myeon Administrative Welfare Center announced plans to create a community rest space, including a small pavilion, on approximately 400 square meters of city-owned land within the village. The detailed design is currently underway, and if conditions allow, construction could begin within this month.
This project aims to address long-standing wishes of the residents and improve their quality of life. Sancheok-myeon recently secured a budget of 53 million won through the second supplementary budget, laying the groundwork for the project.
At the entrance to the village stands an existing pavilion built in the late 1990s. However, the facility is old, the space is limited, and parts such as the stairs are damaged. For these reasons, residents have long requested either an expansion or the construction of a new pavilion.
Choi Byungil, the village head, said, "All the residents are delighted at the news that a new rest area will be built at the entrance of the village," adding, "Since the pavilion will become the face of our village, we will take special care in its maintenance."
The request for the pavilion’s construction was first raised during a conversation between residents and then-presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung when he visited the area in August 2021. At that time, a resident asked if a larger pavilion could be built, but there was no substantial progress afterward.

President Lee revisited the request during a campaign rally in Chungju in May 2025, stating, "I only heard that we couldn’t get the landowner’s consent. From what I see, even expanding it by 6 to 13 square meters would be enough," expressing his regret over the situation.
Once the new pavilion is completed, it is expected to provide a space for rest and communication for the villagers, as well as improve the scenery at the village entrance. The maintenance plan and construction schedule will be finalized through discussions between the township office and the residents.
Daesogang Village is the hometown of President Lee’s father-in-law. Although his wife Kim Hye-kyung was not born there, both her father and grandfather built their lives in this area. It is also known that some of Kim’s distant relatives still reside near the village. During his presidential campaign, President Lee often expressed his special affection for Daesogang Village in Songgang-ri, Sancheok-myeon, saying, "Whenever I come to my in-laws’ hometown in the Chungbuk region, I feel especially warm and comfortable."
