Gwangju City announced on October 8 that it will hold the "Korean Language Competition" event at 11 a.m. on October 11 in the Citizens’ Hall at City Hall to commemorate the 579th anniversary of Hangeul Day. On the same day, the "Bitgoeul Book Festival" will also take place, offering citizens the joy of language and reading at the threshold of autumn.
This event is an educational and cultural program focused on helping elementary school students recognize the beauty and value of the Korean language and form proper language habits. In particular, with the support of the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, certificates will be awarded to outstanding participants, encouraging children to take part and enhancing the prestige of the event.
Previously, from September 23 to 29, the city held preliminary promotional and experiential events at three local elementary schools (Jangsan Elementary School, Yongdu Elementary School, and Geonguk Elementary School). Students selected through these activities will advance to the finals. General citizens can also participate by registering online in advance through mom communities or the "Dear My Gwangju" QR code, or by signing up on-site on the day of the event.
The event will feature language knowledge enhancement sections, including Korean spelling, pure Korean vocabulary, and standard language interpretation. There will also be language comprehension programs for linguistic and sensory minorities, such as sign language guessing and Braille experiences.
In the afternoon of the same day, the "Bitgoeul Book Festival" will be held under the theme "Let’s Fly with Books: Book & Rock." The festival will feature a special lecture by author Lee Nakjun and provide a comfortable outdoor library space for reading. Additionally, a variety of cultural experience programs, such as Starlight Cinema and autumn night healing yoga, will be offered to revitalize daily life, creating a special day that blends reading and relaxation.
Jeon Sunhee, Director of Cultural Heritage, said, "I hope this event will inspire children to take pride in the Korean language and practice a proper language culture," adding, "We will continue to work with the Office of Education and related organizations to promote various regional language and cultural events in the future."
