"Kkumssi Bus"
Improving Mobility Within the International Conference Complex District
Unlike conventional public transportation, the demand responsive transport (DRT) system, which operates without fixed routes or schedules and responds to user requests, will be piloted under the name "Kkumssi Bus."
The Daejeon City Government is temporarily operating the demand responsive transport (DRT) system from October 3, 2025, to December 14, 2025, to alleviate transportation inconveniences for visitors to the Daejeon Convention Center and to improve mobility within the Daejeon Science International Conference Complex District.
The Daejeon Science International Conference Complex District covers an area of 2,160,590 square meters and is home to major facilities such as the Daejeon Convention Center Exhibition Halls 1 and 2, Lotte City Hotel, Hotel Onoma, Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science, the Arts Center, the Municipal Yeonjeong Gugak Center, the Pyeongsong Youth Culture Center, the Municipal Museum of Art, and the Lee Ungno Museum.
The demand responsive transport system operates on the most efficient routes using AI and big data-based dispatching, once a reservation is made through a smartphone app or call center. Internationally, similar services include Uber Shuttle in the United States and the Whim platform in Finland, while in Korea, it is operated in certain areas of Seongnam and Sejong.
The "Kkumssi Bus" service deploys three 15-seater minibuses (with 12 passenger seats each), operating daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Starting from the Daejeon Convention Center Exhibition Hall 2, it connects to the National Monument Center, Hanbat Arboretum, Mannyeon-dong commercial district, Shinsegae Department Store, and Expo Science Park.
When users call for a ride via the app at designated pick-up and drop-off points, the nearest vehicle is assigned. The fare is 500 won, and it is free for elementary school students and younger. To use the service, download and register on the "Shurcle App" from the app store and request a ride.
Jeon Ilhong, Director of Culture, Arts, and Tourism at Daejeon City, stated, "We decided to pilot this service to enhance transportation convenience for visitors coming to the Daejeon Convention Center for international conferences, exhibitions, and tourism. Although the pilot period is short, we will closely monitor operations to assess its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement, and use these insights to further vitalize the complex district."
