Sejong Office of Education Audit
to Be Held at Chungbuk National University on the 23rd
The National Assembly audit of the Sejong City administrative executive branch will take place on October 20 this year. This is the first audit in three years since 2022.
In addition to the Sejong City Council, which represents the local political community, both the Sejong Office of Education and the Sejong Police Agency have also been included as subjects of this year's National Assembly audit.
According to the Public Administration and Security Committee of the National Assembly (Chairman Shin Jeonghoon), the audits of Sejong City and the Sejong Police Agency will be held in the main conference room on the 5th floor of the Boram-dong City Hall building. The second local audit team of the committee will conduct the audit. In the afternoon of the same day, the audit of the Sejong Police Agency will continue.
The second local audit team is led by Assemblyman Seo Beomsoo of the People Power Party, with Assembly members Kwon Chilsung, Yoon Kunyoung, Yang Bunam, Wi Seonggon, Lee Kwanghee, and Lee Sangsik (Democratic Party of Korea), as well as Lee Dalhee, Lee Seongkwon, Joo Ho-young (People Power Party), and Yong Hyein (Basic Income Party) participating as auditors.
According to the executive branch, about 180 documents have been requested by the Public Administration and Security Committee. These include: ▲ records of measures such as executive meetings following the declaration of the December 3 Martial Law by former President Yoon Suk-yeol ▲ records of overseas business trips by Sejong Mayor Choi Minho ▲ status of detection and action taken against abuse of authority by city officials ▲ career histories of political appointees in the Choi Minho administration.
As Choi Minho, the Sejong Mayor from the People Power Party, became the head of a metropolitan autonomous government after his party lost the last presidential election and became the opposition, it is expected that auditors from the Democratic Party will focus their questioning on him. Accordingly, the executive branch appears to be thoroughly preparing for this audit.
The Sejong Office of Education will also undergo a National Assembly audit by the Education Committee (Chairman Kim Youngho) on October 23 at Chungbuk National University, together with the Daejeon, South Chungcheong, and North Chungcheong Offices of Education.
Originally, Cheon Beomsan, the acting Superintendent of the Sejong Office of Education (Deputy Superintendent), was scheduled to appear as the head of the audited institution. However, since he has been nominated as the president of Chungbuk Provincial University and has submitted his resignation, it is possible that the new Deputy Superintendent will take his place.
In the current political landscape, where the opposition holds a majority, the presidential election held after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol resulted in a reversal of the ruling and opposition parties, creating a new political environment. Some interpret this year's National Assembly audit, the first to be conducted under these circumstances, as serving as a compass ahead of next year's nationwide local elections.
