Press Conference Held in Front of Seoul Southern District Court
Lawmakers from the People Power Party visited the Seoul Southern District Court, where the detention review hearing for former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jinsook was being held, to call for her release.
On the afternoon of October 4, Assembly members Bae Hyunjin, Park Sumin, Kang Sunyoung, Kim Jangkyum, Park Chungkwon, Cho Baesook, Choi Boyoon, and Choi Sujin held a press conference in front of the court just before the start of the hearing. They stated, "The police arrest of former Chairperson Lee is illegal and unjust."
Choi Boyoon, the party's chief spokesperson, said, "The arrest was carried out abruptly at a time when public sentiment is already negative due to the recent fire at the National Information Resources Service and the death of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety official in charge. This raises suspicions that the arrest is intended to shift the political landscape." She added, "We will pursue accountability for any illegal aspects related to this arrest to the very end, and we hope for a fair and wise judgment from the court."
Cho Baesook stated, "Former Chairperson Lee submitted a statement of non-attendance through her lawyer and has been continuously coordinating her appearance dates. If such documents were submitted to the court, would a warrant really have been issued?" She emphasized, "Obtaining a warrant by misleading the court constitutes abuse of authority. We will uncover the full truth until the end."
Kim Jangkyum commented, "Since the adjustment of investigative powers between the prosecution and the police, authority has become concentrated within the police. This incident reveals the dangers that arise when the police become politicized."
