"I Will Showcase Korean Cuisine Blending Tradition and Innovation"
Korean-American star chef Edward Lee, who appeared on the Netflix variety show "Chef in Black and White," is preparing the welcome dinner for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju. He stated, "Through this dinner, I sincerely want to share the story of Korean cuisine and Korean ingredients."
On October 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' official YouTube channel released an interview video with Korean-American chef Edward Lee. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Edward Lee is preparing the APEC summit dinner, which will take place in Gyeongju from October 31 to November 1. He plans to collaborate with chefs from Lotte Hotel to present Korean cuisine to leaders from around the world.
In the interview, Edward Lee recalled, "Growing up in the United States, it was difficult to be close to Korean culture. I always wanted to connect with Korean culture, but I didn't know how. Food became the easiest and most powerful bridge connecting me to Korean culture."
He continued, "Korean cuisine has preserved its traditions for a long time, yet it also has the power to harmonize with the world through innovation. I want to showcase both aspects at this dinner." He added, "Korean food is in the global spotlight more than ever before. I want to highlight not only the beauty of Korean cuisine but also its innovative and global potential, such as its harmony with American cuisine."
Regarding his thoughts on preparing the dinner, he said, "I believe good food is important at gatherings of political leaders or CEOs. It's hard to continue uncomfortable debates while enjoying good food. Food can lift people's spirits, and I hope that leads to positive outcomes."
The government will provide menus in the native language of each member country for the world leaders attending this dinner. Typically, only English menus are provided at multilateral meetings, but this is a strategy to convey that Korea is offering the highest level of hospitality to each leader. The dinner menu will be released soon.
In the final episode of "Chef in Black and White" last year, Edward Lee left a strong impression by saying, "My name is Lee Gyun," expressing his pride in his Korean identity. As someone who referred to himself as a "bibim person" and showcased Korean fusion cuisine on the show, there is growing interest in what dishes he will present at the dinner.
